Hidden Gem: Morden Hall Park, London
While London is blessed with an array of commons and parks, many of us are sick of doing the same loop of our local green space and are looking for a bit of variety. For South Londoners, or those willing to make the trip, Morden Hall Park is a great alternative.
The Hall itself is now a wedding venue, but its attached former deer park is free and open to visitors and is one of the few remaining estates that used to line the River Wandle during its industrial heyday.
The 125-acre park seems to encompass every aspect of the traditional British countryside in one place – wildflower fields, watermeadows, even a rose garden. Does it get more English than that? There are ducks to be fed and chances are you’ll spot a kingfisher, dragonfly or heron.
It’s in stark contrast to the built-up city outside, and even has the National Trust’s only garden centre, for those who have discovered their green fingers during lockdown.
The perfect spot if you can’t get away but want to feel as though you’re somewhere completely different.
