Hidden Gem: Kirkstall Abbey, Leeds
By Henry Taylor
To call this a hidden gem is arguably a stretch, given how easily accessible it is from Leeds city centre, but Kirkstall Abbey is well worth a visit if you’re ever in the area. It’s a ruined 12th century monastery, but nevertheless one of the best preserved Cistercian examples in Britain.
Situated on a park that runs along the river Wharfe, the Abbey is spectacular, especially at sunset. There’s loads to explore, especially since the main part of the building is largely intact. If you’ve got kids and think they spend too much time looking at screens, the site’s visitor centre is full of information about life as a monk – thought we can’t guarantee that this will appeal to them as much as the playground.
The ruins have also served as the inspiration for a range of artists, with J.M.W Turner, Thomas Girtin and John Sell Cotman having all drawn or painted the Abbey over the years. More recently, it has played host to concerts – including local band the Kaiser Chiefs – and various TV productions.
The site also hosts markets featuring local makers and producers, though these have been disrupted in recent months.
