From Manchester United’s proposed new stadium to political misinformation, it’s been a very busy week in the world of AI – read as digital expert Abbey Crawford takes us through the latest developments across the AI-sphere.

AI reveals Manchester United’s £2bn stadium dream

AI images reveal a stunning vision for Manchester United's proposed £2 billion stadium, featuring a 100,000-seat arena with a glass roof, four tiers of seating, and Sir Alex Ferguson’s relocated statue. The design, inspired by Bayern Munich’s Allianz Arena and LA's SoFi Stadium, envisions a state-of-the-art complex that could rival Wembley. Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s ambition for a "Wembley of the North" reflects United's plans to replace Old Trafford, their home since 1910, with a world-class facility by 2030. The project, overseen by a task force including Lord Sebastian Coe and Gary Neville, aims to rejuvenate the surrounding area and create a new landmark for Manchester.

Musk's AI video raises red flags for misinformation

Elon Musk's promotion of an AI-generated video impersonating Vice President Kamala Harris underscores a growing threat: the potential for misleading and manipulating public perception with advanced technology. The video, which used a convincing AI voice to spread false claims, highlights how easily AI can blur the lines between reality and fiction, particularly within a sensitive political content. Musk’s initial sharing of the video without clear labelling or context risks amplifying misinformation, exacerbating the challenges of regulating AI in political discourse. This incident reveals the urgent need for robust safeguards to prevent AI tools from undermining democratic processes and deceiving the public.

Revolutionary AI features unveiled by Apple

Apple launched Apple Intelligence, a suite of AI features, in the developer beta of iOS 18.1 for iPhone, iPad, and Mac. It enhances Siri, generates emails and images, and sorts notifications. Developers can test it now, with a public release expected later this year. Exclusive to iPhone 15 Pro and newer models, it includes a new Siri look, improved command recognition, troubleshooting help, better photo search, AI-generated summaries, and text generation tools. More features like image and emoji generation and OpenAI ChatGPT integration will hopefully roll out over the next year.

UK probes Google-Anthropic AI deal

Britain's competition watchdog is scrutinising Google's partnership with AI startup Anthropic, ramping up regulatory attention on AI investments. The Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) is seeking feedback until August 13 to determine if the deal reduces competition for AI services in the UK. Founded by former OpenAI employees, Anthropic focuses on AI safety and reliability. Google, which invested billions last year, stresses its commitment to an open AI ecosystem and notes that Anthropic can use multiple cloud providers.
