Despite the efforts of a squadron of celebrities — including Jamie Oliver and Joe Wicks, along with a battalion of tractors giving Parliament Square their best “go-slow” — the government has always been likely to win the battle over the Agriculture Bill and chlorinated chicken imports.

The government is clear that it does not want its hands tied by commitments in the Agriculture Bill that might undermine the trade deals it hopes to achieve. And once the government committed to that overriding priority, the majority it enjoys in the House of Commons made it almost impossible for them to be prevented from achieving their goal...
