Attending Davos during the World Economic Forum (WEF) is stepping into the epicentre of global decision-making. Perched on the "magic mountain" (so coined by Thomas Mann in his book which has just celebrated 100 years) in the Swiss Alps, the annual January gathering transforms this picturesque ski town into a nexus where political leaders, CEOs, thinkers, and changemakers converge. It's an intoxicating mix of high-powered networking, intellectual exchange, and global dealmaking. From wooden huts doling out corporate swag to heated debates on AI and geopolitics, the Promenade is both a spectacle and a microcosm of global priorities.

But Davos isn’t just about its contradictions—though there are plenty. Electric car discussions happen alongside idling limousines, and equity pledges contrast with a glaringly historically low 28% female participation. It’s also about the unparalleled opportunities it offers to connect, listen, and contribute. This year’s themes is Collaboration for the Intelligent Age and is centred around rebuilding trust, reimagining growth and investing in people, but the magic lies in the unscripted moments: a chance meeting on the train from Klosters to a thought-provoking panel that reframes your perspective.

The Heimatmuseum Programme: A Breath of Fresh (Alpine) Air

This year, SEC Newgate UK is co-curating a special programme at the Heimatmuseum: "The Art of Creating Value: Healthy People + Healthy Planet = Prosperous Future"

It's a day-long exploration of some of the most pressing issues of our time, crafted to challenge, inspire, and foster connection. Highlights include the launch of Gulf International Bank Asset Management’s Women in Climate podcast, panels on AI-driven women’s health solutions from Mount Sinai Health Systems, workplace menopause mandates led by Women in Work, and innovative approaches to financing impact with KR1. The Heimatmuseum offers a refreshing alternative to the corporate narrative on the Promenade, featuring meaningful discussions, intimate settings, and a strong community spirit—complete with locally-prepared breakfasts, bread-making sessions, and mulled wine breaks.

This programme is a reminder that amidst the power plays and headline-grabbing announcements, Davos also holds space for the humanities and seeks to showcase creative, values-driven solutions to global challenges. And at 1,560 meters above sea level, it’s easy to find clarity and inspiration.

What to Wear: Style, Warmth, and a Dash of Alpine Chic

Now, let’s talk wardrobe, because dressing for Davos is an art form. Thanks to my programme collaborator and cross-pollinator Johanna Zuleta for these top tips!

The weather is "minus brrrrr," the streets are icy, and the venues are a mix of frigid exteriors and overheated interiors. Here’s the formula for survival and style:

  1. Layers are everything: Start with merino wool thermals, add a fine cashmere sweater, and finish with a tailored wool blazer.
  2. Footwear first: Warm, waterproof, and stylish boots are non-negotiable. Skip the moon boots; go for thermic boots with removable spikes for icy streets.
  3. Cozy yet elegant outerwear: Think long coats, thick scarves, and gloves. A beanie is essential—bonus points if it’s hand-knitted or ethically sourced.
  4. Colour is your ally: Among the sea of black and navy suits, a pop of colour or an artisan-crafted statement piece can make you memorable.

Practical tips? Carry a foldable bag for swag, bring adapters (Davos drains batteries as much as energy levels), and don’t skimp on business cards – ideally digital. For the brave souls, stilettos and bare legs can be spotted inside the congress centre—but outside, practicality reigns supreme.

Attending Davos is about navigating a delicate dance between power, purpose, and—yes—even fashion. So, come for the dialogue, stay for the inspiration, and don’t forget to pack with character and charm.

See you on the mountain!
